For every FPL customer who completes the House of Savings experience (an energy saving program), $2 will be donated on their behalf, up to a total of $100,000, toward FPL’s Care to Share program, which helps Floridians experiencing financial difficulties. Free Lunch
Broward County Public Schools is offering free breakfast and lunch to all district students during the 2023/24 school year through the Community Eligibility Provision and a new pilot program – Universal Free Lunch. To sustain the Universal Free Lunch Program Pilot and to be eligible for additional benefits, parents are urged to complete the online application for Meal Benefits and the Income Survey Form. Both forms are available at myschoolapps.com.
Shred Event
Deerfield Beach – The City of Deerfield Beach will be hosting a free shredding event, Aug. 19 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Fire Station 66, 590 S. Powerline Road. Residents may bring old files and confidential paperwork for shredding. The customer is responsible for removing all large metal and plastic clips, spines, and plastic notebook covers. File folders, paperclips, and staples are acceptable. Proof of residency must be provided – a driver’s license or utility bill. The limit is two boxes per vehicle.
Sarah’s Songs In Summer
Pompano Beach – Sarah’s Songs In Summer, an intimate cocktail party featuring the music of Sarah Sellers McDougald and other local musicians, will take place Aug. 24 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Sample-McDougald House, 450 NE 10 St. The cost is $15 for the public and free to Sample-McDougald House Preservation Society members. There will be an open bar and light bites served.
CERT Training
Pompano Beach – Training classes for the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) begin Oct. 4. CERT members will train with Pompano Beach Fire Rescue for eight weeks and learn skills that can help their families and community after a disaster. Visit pompanobeachfl.gov/getready to register.
Yard Sale
Oakland Park – The city is partnering with Oakland Park Kiwanis to host the citywide yard sale on Aug. 26, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Jaco Pastorius Park, 4000 N. Dixie Hwy. Vendor spaces are available, $10 for residents and $20 for non-residents. Visit oaklandparkfl.gov/223/citywide-yard-sale to register.
Auditions
Fort Lauderdale – The Broward Women’s Chorus will hold auditions to recruit new members on Aug. 30, 10 a.m. at Sunshine Cathedral, 1480 SW 9 Ave. Call 954-942-8711 for an audition appointment.

Last Summer at Bluefish Cove

Addiction Recovery
Margate – A peer-led support network for families dealing with addiction and recovery, hosted by Learn to Cope Florida, meets the second and fourth Monday of each month, 7:30 to 8:30 p.m., at Fellowship Recovery Center, 5400 W. Atlantic Blvd.
